 A Volcano is born

Introduction 

One day, a farmer named Dionisio Pulido worked in his cornfield.

He spotted a crack in the ground.

Smoke hissed out of it.

The smoke smelled like rotten eggs. 

Dionisio heard loud rumbles, like thunder.

Trees shook. Then, gray ash shot into the air.  A volcano was born!

Volcanoes can be dangerous.

But Dionisio, his family, and all his neighbors were lucky.

They got away safely.

도입부
어느날, 디오니시오 플리도라 불리는 농부가 옥수수 밭에서 일하다,
땅에서 갈라진 틈새를 발견했습니다. 거기에서 연기가 나왔습니다.  그 연기는 썩은 달걀냄새 같았습니다.  디오니시오는 천둥소리처럼 우르르 쾅쾅하는 소리를 들었고,  나무들이 흔들리고 회색 잿더미가 공중으로 튀었습니다. 화산이 탄생했어요!  화산은 위험할 수 있지만 디오니시오의 가족과 그의 이웃들은 운 좋게도 무사히 그 자리를 빠져나올 수 있었어요.

Vents 

All volcanoes are vents, or cracks in the ground.

These vents let rocks, lava, and ash out of the earth.

분화구

모든 화산들은 분화구이거나 땅의 갈라진 틈새로부터 기원한다.
분화구들은 땅에서 돌, 마그마(용암), 화산재를 분출시킨다.


Lava and Ash 

Lava is very hot, melted rock.

Sometimes it flows slowly out of vents.

Sometimes it shoots out in red, glowing fountains.

Then it cools and becomes hard rock.

Ash is gray dust. It starts out as rock.

Then a volcano erupts, or blows up.

The blast breaks the rock into bits of dust.

Only the strongest blasts turn rocks into ash.

 
용암과 화산재
용암은 바위가 녹아내려 매우 뜨겁다.   때로 용암(마그마) 은 분화구 밖으로 천천히 흘러내린다. 때로는 빨갛게 이글거리는 샘에서 분출해서 그것이 식으면 딱딱한 돌로 굳어진다.화산재는 회색 먼지인데 돌로 시작해서 화산이 폭파해서 돌을 작게 깨트려서 재로 만든다. 단지 가장 강력한 화산폭발이 바위를 화산재로 만든다.

Eruptions 

A volcano can erupt many times. Some volcanoes erupt often.

Others wait many years between eruptions.

Rock, lava, and ash pile up after each eruption.

The volcano in Dionisio’s cornfield grew into a tall mountain.

It covered the town of Paricutin, Mexico.

The people who had lived there moved away.

Somewhere today, the ground is shaking.

A vent is opening. Smoke is hissing out.

A volcano is forming!

분출(폭발,분화)
화산은 여러번 폭파한다. 어떤것들은 자주 분출하고 어떤것들은 분출 사이의 간격이 몇년이 되기도 한다.  돌, 용암 그리고 화산재는 분출 직후 쌓인다. 디오니시오 옥수수밭에서 폭파한 화산은 큰 산이 되었다. 그것은 멕시코 파리커틴 마을을 뒤덮었고, 거기에 살았었던 사람들은 모두 이사갔다. 오늘날도 어디선가 땅이 흔들리고 있다. 분화구가 열리고 연기를 내뿜고 그렇게 화산이 형성되고 있다!
