Cats and dogs don’t always get along very well. However, in the new book, The Story of Diva and Flea, a cat named Flea and a dog named Diva become friends and have a lot of adventures together. The story takes place in Paris, France.

The book was written by Mo Willems and illustrated by Tony DiTerlizzi. Mo Willems is well known for his popular picture book series, Elephant & Piggie, and other picture books. This is his first time writing a chapter book. The story was inspired by a cat and dog that Willems met while he was living in Paris. Tony DiTerlizzi is the illustrator behind The Spiderwick Chronicles.

TFK chatted with Willems and DiTerlizzi about the book.

고양이와 개가 항상 잘 지내는 것은 아니다.

그러나 The story of Diva and Flea라는 책에서 고양이 플리와 개 디바는 친구가 되어 함께 많은 모험을 한다.

프랑스 파리에서 이야기는 시작된다.

모 윌리엄 원작, 토니 디털리찌 그림의 이 책에서 모 윌리엄스는 대중적인 그림책 시리즈 Elephant & Piggie 작가로 잘 알려져 있다.

그 이외에도 많은 작품들이 있다. 이것은 그의 첫번째 이야기책(챕터북)이다. 이야기는 윌리엄스가 파리에 살고 있을때 알게 된 고양이와 강아지에 영감을 받은 것이었다. 토니 디털리찌는 The Spiderwick Chronicles 삽화가이다.

타임포키즈는 The Story of Diva and Flea 책에 대해서 윌리엄스와 디털리찌와 이야기를 나눴다.

The Story of Diva and Flea is the first chapter book written by picture book author Mo Willems.

 

TFK:

What was the inspiration for The Story of Diva and Flea?

The Story of Diva and Flea 는 어떤 영감을 받아 썼나요?

 

MO WILLEMS:

Almost all stories are a combination of things that have happened and things that could never happen. This story started with a big dose of something that happened to me and grew into the made-up story in the book. I lived for a year in Paris and would hang out with the real Diva and Flea every morning on my way to buy bread. In a way, they helped me make up the story.

거의 모든 이야기들이 주변에서 일어나는 일들과 결코 일어날 수 없는 일들의 합작이다.

이 이야기는 나에게 일어 났었던 일로 시작해서 허구적인 이야기로 전개되었다.

나는 파리에서 일년동안 살았고 빵을 사러가는 매일 아침  실제의 디바와 플리와 많은 시간을 보내곤 했다. 어떤면에서 그들은 내가 이야기를 쓰는데 많은 도움을 주었다.

 

TFK:

Did you find it more difficult to write a book for older kids than to write picture books?

그림책을 쓰는 것보다 큰 아이들을 위한 책(챕터북)을 쓰는 것이 더 어렵게 느껴졌습니까?

 

WILLEMS:

Yes. This is my first middle grade book, and I was a little scared writing something new like this. In some ways it was harder to write, because there were more words I had to come up with. But, in other ways it was easier, because I had more words I could choose from. Just like every person is a different size, every story has its own size. Trying to explain Diva and Flea’s story in a picture book would be like making someone wear pants that were four sizes too small.

그렇죠. 이 책은 나의 첫 챕터북이다. 나는 다소 이와 같은 새로운 것을 쓰는 것을 다소 두려워했다. 어떤 면에서 글을 쓴다는 것은 더 어렵다. 더 많은 단어들을 생각해내야하기 때문이다.

그러나 의외로 내가 선택할 수 있는 단어들이  많았기 때문에  쉬웠다.

모든 사람이 그릇이 다르듯, 이야기 또한 크기가 다르다.

그림책 디바와 플리 이야기를 설명하려 하는 것은 너무 작은 4 사이즈인 팬츠를 입는 것과 같다.

 

TFK:

How did you team up with Tony DiTerlizzi for the illustration?

일러스트레이터인 토니와 어떻게 팀을 이루었습니까?

 

WILLEMS:

Tony is a friend. I like the way he draws and I like hanging out with him. So, I thought that working on this book would be a fun way to see his drawings and hang out, and, you know what? It was!

토니는 친구다. 나는 그가 그림 그리는 방식을 좋아한다. 그리고 그와 함께 시간 보내는 것을 좋아한다.

그래서 나는 이  책에서 함께 작업하면 그의 그림도 실컷 보고 함께 보내는 시간도 많을 거라고 생각했다.

 

TFK:

What advice do you have for aspiring writers?

야망을 품은 작가지망생들에게 어떤 충고를 해주고 싶습니까?

 

WILLEMS:

All you have to do to become a writer is write! Write every day and you’ll be a writer every day. Now, getting published is different, but there’s a trick to that, too. If you write every day for long enough, one day you’ll become such an accomplished writer that your stories and ideas will become superlative. Everybody wants to publish anything that’s superlative.

작가가 되기위해서 해야 하는 것은 단지 쓰는 것이다!

매일 쓰면 항상 작가로 살아가는 것이다.

지금 출판하는 것은 다른 문제다. 그러나 그것 또한 동기가 될수 있다.

만일 충분히 오랜 기간동안 매일 글을 쓴다면, 어느날 당신은 성공한 작가가 되어 당신의 이야기와 아이디어가 최상이 될 날이 올것이다.  모두가 최상의 작품을 출판하기를 원한다.

 

TFK:

What other projects do you have in the works now?

이제 작품활동에서 당신은 어떤 다른 작품을 생각하고 있습니까?

 

WILLEMS:

Next summer the very final Elephant & Piggie book will be published. It’s called The Thank You Book and

I wrote it for you to thank you for reading my stories.

What was your inspiration for the illustrations in The Story of Diva and Flea?

The Story of Diva and Flea에서 그림을 그릴때 어떤 영감을 받았습니까?

 

TONY DITERLIZZI: 

I was inspired by the grand city of Paris, the perfect setting to give the artwork and this book a classical package. Also, I was thrilled to meet the actual dog and cat who still reside at the apartment that Mo stayed in while he penned this story. To meet the living inspirations for these characters made Mo’s story all the more exciting for me as an illustrator.

나는 거대한 도시 파리에 영감을 받았다.

파리는 클래식 패키지로 이 책을 그리는데 더 없이 좋은 완벽한 배경이다.

또한 나는 모 윌리엄스가 이 이야기를 쓸 때 머물렀던 아파트에 여전히 살고 있는 실제 개와 고양이를 만난다는 것에 흥분했다.

일러스트레이터로서 이 책의 캐릭터를 위해 살아있는 영감을 받는 것은  모 윌리엄스의 이야기를 더 흥미롭게 만들어 주었다.

Did you automatically know what Diva and Flea looked like in your mind?

디바 와 플리가 당신에게 어떻게 보였나요?

DITERLIZZI:

Tony DiTerlizzi’s illustrations were inspired by his visit to Paris.

 

Sort of. From the start, I wanted their physical appearance to show the difference in their lifestyle. To achieve this took some visually exploring during the sketch phase. In the end, the pampered dog, Diva, is drawn as an open shape with little or no shading. The alley cat, Flea, is textured with dense crosshatching. Diva is one even color, cream, where Flea is a patchwork of light, darks–even scars–to illustrate his imperfect life. Understanding the characters helped me create visual images that reflected Mo’s story.

뭐랄까 처음부터 나는 그들의 라이프 스타일에서 차이를 보이는 외관을 원했다.

이것을 이루는 것은 스케치 단계에서 시각적으로 모험을 하는 것이었다.

결국, 강아지 디바는 그림자 없는 개방된 형태로 그려졌다.

도둑 고양이 플리는 빽빽한 크로스 헤칭 방법으로 질감을 나타냈다.

디바는 한가지색 크림색으로 그려진 반면 플리는 밝고, 어두운 심지어 불완전한 삶을 그리기위해서 상처있는 자국들을 조각조각 이어 작업했다.

캐릭터를 이해하는 것이 내가 모 윌리엄스 이야기를 반영하는 시각적 이미지를 만들어내는데 도움을 주었다.

What is your favorite illustration detail in the story and why?

 자신이 그린 작품중 가장 좋아하는 그림은 무엇입니까?

 

DITERLIZZI:  

There are actually a few fun details, or rather Easter eggs, hidden in the art. For instance, two of Mo’s iconic characters The Pigeon and Piggie (of Elephant & Piggie fame) are hidden in the signage around Paris. Also, Jared Grace, hero of The Spiderwick Chronicles, literally makes a cameo in one of the scenes. I wanted to acknowledge the success that both Mo and I had achieved prior to creating this book, but mostly add fun little winks and nods to our longtime readers.

사실 몇 장의 재미난 작업이 있다.

예를 들어, (Elephant & Piggie)에서 비둘기와 새끼 돼지인 모 윌리엄스의 두 아이콘적 캐릭터들은 파리 주변의 표지판에서 볼수 있다. 또한 The Spiderwick Chronicles의 남자 주인공인 그레이스는 문자 그대로  많은 장면들 중 한 장면에 출연하는 카메오(유명 배우의 단역 출연) 출연을 했다.

대개  오랜 독자들에게 공감을 불러 일으키는 것을 넘어 나는 모 윌리엄스와 내가 이 책(The story of Diva and Flea)을 만들기전에 이룬 성공을 인정받기를 원했다.

 

DON HEINY FOR TIME FOR KIDS

The Story of Diva and Flea is a new chapter book for early grade readers. It was written by Mo Willems and illustrated by Tony DiTerlizzi.

 

TFK:

How did you and Mo approach working together on this book?

당신과 모 윌리엄스는 이 책에서 어떻게 함께 작품에 접근했습니까?

 

DITERLIZZI: 

We came to it with mutual admiration and respect for what each has accomplished and a shared passion for bookmaking. Though Mo wrote this story and I created the illustrations, he is also an artist and I write. We openly discussed plot points and the composition of sketches, which is not the usual protocol when creating a kid’s book. Yet, it was the experience of making a book with Mo that attracted me to this project from the beginning. Our goal is one and the same: To craft books that we think young readers will enjoy.

우리는 각자가 이룬것에 대해서 서로를 존경 한다. 그리고 책을 만드는 열정을 나눈다.

비록 모 윌리엄스가 이야기를 쓰고 나는 그림을 그리지만, 그 또한 예술가이고 나도 때로는 글을 쓴다. 우리는 개방적으로 구상 포인트와 스케치 구성을 의논했다. 그것은 아이들 책을 만들때 평범한 방식은 아니다. 그러나 처음부터 이 프로젝트로 나를 이끌었던 모 윌리엄스와 책 만드는 방법이었다. 우리의 목표는 하나다. 그리고 똑같다. 우리가 생각하기에 어린 독자들이 즐길 꼼꼼하게 공들인 책을 만들자라는 것이다.

 

TFK:

What other projects do you have in the works now?

작품활동에서 지금  당신은 어떤 다른 작품을 생각하고 있나요?

 

DITERLIZZI: 

I am currently writing and illustrating my first picture book in nearly a decade. For me, the challenge of a great picture book is finding that perfect symbiotic relationship with words and pictures. I’ve been working on this particular story off and on for many years, so I think I might have figured it out. I suppose only time will tell.

나는 현재 거의 10년만에 내가 직접 쓰면서 그리는 첫번째 그림책을 준비중이다.

나에게 그림책에 대한 도전은 단어와 그림의 완벽한 상징적 관계를 찾는 것이다. 나는 특별한 이야기를 구상해왔고 몇년동안, 그것을 해결하려고 고심해왔다. 때가 되면 자연히 알게 될것이다.
